It seems that Anna Mae He (Baker) is now being called He Mei in her school in China. I can't imagine having my name taken away after losing so much already. I suppose it may be easier for her to blend in this way. Or perhaps the Chinese teachers will only call her by her Chinese name. Still, it must be hard.
The article states that at home she is probably still being called Anna Mae and spoken to in English. However, I guess folks wouldn't know this for certain unless they were there.

I think the whole situation is sad and wished it could have been worked out better. However, adoptive parents often change their children's names and bring them to new countries where everything is different. They adjust. So will Anna Mae. I bet she will be OK.

He Mei is the same as (Anna) Mei He, but in Chinese. Of course you know this. "He" is her last name, and Mei is her real first name. Her foster parents, the Bakers, unwisely changed her name. I think it is working out fine. She is among her real family and living in a place where she does not have to be embarrassed about who she is or lie that she is Mexican. The only thing I am sad about is that because the Bakers kept her from her family, she never learned her own language, Chinese. As a result, she had to go back to 2nd grade in school. The Bakers sought to destroy that child in order to keep her illegally. Funny how the Hes allow He Mei to be in contact with the little white Baker girl, while the Bakers never let He Mei be in contact with her own parents or siblings. Evil.
